What is Freecell Solitaire?
Freecell Solitaire is the hardest version of the solitaire game. Move all cards on the tableau to four foundations and arrange them in ascending order.
This game was developed by Paul Alfille who is a medical student at the University of Illinois. After that, the computerized version was introduced. In 1991, this game was preinstalled in Windows and started to attract many players who were keen on solitaire games. This game features not only challenging gameplay but also stunning 2D graphics. The layout
The deck in this game has three parts including Tableau, Foundation, and Free Cells.
- Tableau: It is located at the center of the screen. There are 8 columns with 52 cards on the tableau. Four left columns contain more cards than four right columns. Specifically, each left column has 7 cards while each right column has 6 cards.
- Foundation: Four empty spaces at the top right of the screen are foundations. These foundations will contain stacks of cards. Each stack is arranged in ascending order and in a suit.
- Freecell: Four empty spaces at the top left of the screen are free cells. These free cells serve as storage which will help to restore the cards temporarily. You can put only one card on a free cell.
The playing rules of Freecell Solitaire
All steps
Your objective in this game is to eliminate all cards on the tableau in the shortest time and within the fewest moves. If you want to complete this goal, you must follow the following steps.
- Step 1: At the start of the game, you should arrange the cards on the tableau. These cards can be organized in descending sequence. Moreover, they must be arranged in alternating colors. For example, you can place a black Jack card onto a red Queen card. While you arrange the cards on the tableau, make sure that all Aces and Deuces are free. Besides moving a card, you are allowed to move a stack of cards from one column to another one. However, the bottom card of this stack must be higher in value than the top card of the target column. Furthermore, their colors must be opposite.
- Step 2: When there are no more playable cards on the tableau, you can start to move four cards to the free cells. It is a good idea to prioritize transferring the cards placed onto the Aces and Deuces first.
- Step 3: When any Aces and Deuces are free, you must move them to the foundation immediately. Then, place cards with a higher value onto them. Make sure that each foundation contains a complete stack of cards which are arranged in ascending order and in a suit.
Some useful tips and tricks
Like Spider Solitaire, this game is very challenging. Therefore, you need to build your own strategies to win the game easily.
- Prioritize rearranging the cards on the tableau: At the start of the game, you should reorganize the cards on the tableau first instead of moving them to the free cells or foundations. You must analyze the positions of all cards on the tableau and look for Aces and low cards which are buried underneath. After that, build your own plan to free these low cards.
- Attempt to keep one of the free cells empty: If you do not want to get stuck, you should not fulfill all free cells with cards. Keep at least one free cell empty.
- Try to clear all cards in a column: Four free cells are not enough for you to restore unnecessary cards. Therefore, you need to create more storage by eliminating the cards of a column on the tableau. An empty space on the tableau can contain more than one card as long as these cards are arranged in descending order and alternating colors.
- Utilize the Undo button: If you have any tactics, do not hesitate to apply them. If they do not work and make you get stuck, you can click the Undo button to reverse the last moves. This helps to prevent you from losing the game.
- Be patient and come up with your own strategies: Before starting to play the game, you need to analyze the deck and build your own strategies. This helps to increase your winning chances. Of course, sometimes you will get stuck. Don't worry and rush to make impatient decisions! Wait a little while to take off your mind to find the best way to win the game.
